How difficult can it be
That's one of the most stupid question you can ever ask yourself, "How difficult can it be?" If your asking yourself then it's gonna be more than you can handle. I was just asking myself this while watching television. While considering how difficult stuff is in general and I formulated this plan.
Now your probably wondering who I am. I'm just a nobody really, I have no skills, rich or important friends, all I do pretty much all the time is run a small corporate events company. We do everything from corporate events to celebrity parties and events. For the likes of Robin Gibb, Phil Collins, Pete Townshend, Bill Wyman, because of this what I do is classified as the entertainment sector. However most of it is based in the corporate sector which really only involves carring heaps of stuff from place to place.
Most people think it's some sort of glamourous job, in truth it's mainly working unsocial hours, taking the blame for everything, including stuff that's nothing to do with us. While smiling lots and being polite, all the while making others look good and generally making it look easy. I was speaking with a producer of TV programs some years ago, who said corporate videographers lacked the skills to make TV programs. I considered this statement and thought it was complete rubbish. In corporate production we have to produce more events for less money than anyone else, we have less prep time less budget and higher client expectation. So I've had this plan to build a more film/ program making section to what we do. It's only a matter of having a subject to film. I started making a film about Paragliding which was going okay till I crashed into pretty much everything in way from trees, walls, farm machinery and finally the ocean nearly drowning in the process.
What's the plan
Well that's changed a few times along the way, I've been really busy and it's hard to find the time when you've got a full time job, paragliding is very weather dependant and over the last few years there's been less and less flyable weather in Britain.
I can't count the number of times I've driven down to wales to fly "the Blorenge" with Paul and Chris from Paraventure and the weather's been too bad to get off the ground. So I'm guessing I'll have to come back to that one. The other thing is the money involved is massive the most important thing I've learnt it's much easier when your spending someone else's money. Then again that's the hardest thing finding someone to share your vision who are prepared to get involved. As I stated making a film about paragliding, is something I'll return to later I just need the time to be right after all it's a totally mad expirience to fly a big bin bag. The current project is still based in the field of Extreme and Action Sports, but are slightly less weather dependant.
Why the change, well the weather was the main factor nearly drowning did focus my mind on picking a project which I could finish. Was the next most impotant thing as I would need to have a program to present to a channel.
Being dead won't help build up the company, This is not how much danger you can deal wih but how danger you can manage.
So it would seem that I have become the reluctant tour guide in all this, you'll have to bear with me while this all unfolds future.
Where did the idea come from
Well the idea had been floating around for a while, I've always enjoyed film making and even entered the young film makers competition once about 25 years ago while still at school. The problem the school I attended only had enough money for 3 rolls of film to be shot, that's only 12 minutes. With 5 members of the film club that's less than 2 minutes of film each per year. So while it was a rather poor start to become a Producer. At college things went from bad to worse, I discovered Beer, Girls and more Beer. Which put pay to my film making career for the time being. I was lucky enough to find the Wokng Adventure Group. Which was setup to help unpriviledged kids to try various adventure sports you could choose from scuba diving, canoeing, climbing, windsurfing, mountain biking. This was probably one of the best things I've ever been involved with and it did more to prepare me for work than any college course. in different shapes and forms. I've busy building a little company since 1997.
It's purpose
The idea was simple enough however delivering on the idea has been much harder than I could have ever planned. I'm in a way the reluctant tour guide into this ramshackle make shift and generally disorganised attempt at making something from nothing.
The long term goals are to create a full time job for one or two people, build a small company which gives longevity to this project and build a platform from which we can progress into a different business.
What's in a name
it's meaning is simple while I consider myself not the bluntest spoon in the draw I've looked it up just to make sure.
No⋅mad(nō'mād')
Pronunciation [noh-mad]
–noun
a member of a people or tribe that has no permanent abode but moves about from place to place, usually seasonally and often following a traditional route or circuit according to the state of the pasturage or food supply.
Spanish: nómada, German: der Nomade, *die Nomadin, Japanese: 遊牧民
Trav⋅el⋅ler (trāv'əl-ər, trāv'lər)
Pronunciation [trav-uh-ler, trav-ler]
–noun Chiefly British.
One who travels or has traveled, as to distant places.
Spanish: viajero; trabajo, German: der/die Reisende, Japanese: 旅行者
So it's not just about travel by any means, to any destination but it's also to over come difficulty, challenges and ultimatley succeed in returning home.
What this project won't be
This project won't be a Ray Mears, Bear Grylls, bushcraft survival skills adventure. It won't be a Top Gear inspired trip into a contrived reality. it won't be glossy and glamourous like all the shows you'd normally find on TV. While I enjoy the afore mentioned programs they are aimed at a specific target audience. What I'm hoping to do is make a factual piece which can be other some real help should ever be inclined to have a look for yourself. So it's a website which is has to be informative, but it could be presented in a more fluid way. This won't be some pretend educational Bushcraft, travel, adventure look at me website, I'm just planning this document and what happens, happens along the way of this a very long term adventure.
